Yoobot, the new way to fight child obesity

The majority of Britain’s youngsters are unaware of the devastating effects eating junk food can have, according to a British Heart Foundation survey.
It revealed that seven out of ten children (73 per cent) were unaware that a shortened life was the worst consequence of eating badly.
Nearly half (45 per cent) of all eight to 15-year-olds thought the most dangerous side effects of eating junk food were to make them put on weight, cause their teeth to rot, give them spots or make them unpopular.
The heart charity released the new survey results as it launched its latest Food4Thought initiative and its innovative new online game – the Yoobot - to help children to make informed and healthier food choices.
Latest predictions show that two thirds of all children will be overweight or obese by 2050 and today’s youngsters may be the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents. Almost a third (31 per cent ) of ten and eleven year olds are currently over weight or obese.
But the majority of children are oblivious to the impact obesity could have on their lives with more than half (56 per cent) predicting they will live to be over 80 and one in ten (eleven per cent) believing they will live to more than 100.
To get children thinking about their health, the BHF has unveiled the Yoobot - its latest weapon in the fight against childhood obesity. The Yoobot is an online game (yoobot.co.uk) which allows children to play with their future, helping them understand the long term effects of a poor diet.
Users create their own Yoobot - a mini version of themselves that they can personalise with an uploaded photograph. The choices they make for their Yoobot, from the food it eats, to the exercise it does, have a direct impact upon the lifespan and wellbeing of their mini-me. The Yoobot has many appealing and not-so appealing habits – from break dancing to breaking wind.
The Yoobot doesn’t just live on the website, it talks to its creator throughout the day using SMS and e-mail. It will complain if it’s hungry, ask for junk food and generally make itself a part of the user’s life.
BHF Director of Prevention and Care Mike Knapton said: “Today’s junk food generation can’t see beyond the burger box. They are missing the fact that eating unhealthily can have dire consequences on their long-term health.
“The Yoobot is an innovative way for children to explore the effects of eating a diet of junk food. The clock is ticking on the obesity time bomb and it is now more important than ever for children to be educated enough to take control of their diets.”

New York Governor David Paterson has proposed to levy an 18 percent tax on non-diet soft drinks under the guise of combating obesity. Government doesn’t get much more cynical than this.
After alleging that “almost one in four New Yorkers under age 18 are obese,” Paterson’s budget proposal for 2009-2010 asserts that, “Significant price increases should discourage individuals, especially children and teenagers, from consumption and help fight obesity which results in higher risk for diabetes and heart disease.” So the purpose of the tax, according to proposal, is to discourage people from drinking non-diet soft drinks.
The proposal then estimates that the tax will raise $404 million during 2009-2010 and — get this — $539 million during 2010-2011. Since tax revenues from non-diet soft drink sales are budgeted to increase rather than decrease — as one might expect from the alleged purpose of the tax — Paterson actually seems to be counting on the tax not working. Combating obesity is not grounds for the tax; it is, instead, camouflage for it — and not very good camouflage at that.
In his Dec. 18 New York Times paean to the tax, columnist Nicholas Kristof ominously intoned that, “The average American consumes about 35 gallons of non-diet soda each year and gets more added sugar from soda than from desserts.”
But that 35 gallons works out to about a can of non-diet soda (containing about 140 calories) per day. Is a can of non-diet soda per day something to worry about? If common sense is not enough to answer that question, then consider the food recommendations made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
In its dietary guidelines for Americans — a.k.a. the “Food Pyramid” — the USDA recommends the servings that should be consumed daily from different food groups, including fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, milk and oils. The USDA makes these recommendations for different levels of individual daily calorie consumption, starting at a 1,000-calorie-per-day diet and going up to a 3,200 calorie-per-day diet.
In addition to fruits, vegetables, grains and the other food groups, the USDA also includes a category labeled, “Discretionary calorie allowance,” which constitutes the calories left over for each diet level after consuming the recommended amounts from the other food groups. Someone who should consume 1,000 calories per day and who ate the recommended portions of fruits, grains, meats, milk and oils would only have consumed 835 calories. That person would have 165 calories left over for discretionary eating — more than enough room for a 140-calorie can of non-diet soda. At the high-end of daily calorie consumption, someone who is on a 3,200-calorie-per-day diet would have a discretionary calorie allowance of 648 calories — more than 4.5 cans of non-diet soda.
The bottom line is that, all calories being equal, a can of non-diet soda per day — that is, Kristof’s ominous 35 gallons per year — is well with the guidelines of the USDA’s Food Pyramid for most people and so cannot be viewed as a persuasive factoid in support of Paterson’s proposed tax.
Kristof is also way off base in his effort to liken non-diet soft drinks to tobacco. “These days,” Kristof asserts, “sugary drinks are to American health roughly what tobacco was a generation ago.” Kristof then quotes long-time food nanny Barry Popkin, who says, “Soft drinks are linked to diabetes and obesity in the way that tobacco is to lung cancer.”
As this column has pointed out before, there simply is no scientific basis for concluding that non-diet drinks cause obesity or diabetes. The National Academy of Sciences concluded in 2002 that, “There is no clear and consistent association between increased intake of added sugars and [body weight].” And this remains true today.
An August 2008 review of research on soft drinks and weight gain by Emily Wolff (Boston University School of Medicine) and Michael Dansinger (Tufts University) concluded, “Sugar-sweetened soft drink intake has increased dramatically during the past few decades, yet the magnitude of the weight gain and adverse health effects by soft drinks are poorly understood due to a paucity of clinical trial data… which would be necessary to demonstrate a causal link between sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption and weight gain.” The translation is that despite decades of research — including at least five clinical trials — into the health effects of soft drinks, scientists still can’t identify any specific harm with any certainty.
Public health scolds unfortunately often try to blacken and intimidate anyone who disagrees with them by likening them to the tobacco industry. But to the extent there is any deceit-in-the-name-of-money being practiced in the case of non-diet drinks, that charge is more appropriately laid at the feet of the New York Governor and his supporters in the media and public health industry. If this group was sincere about its concern for obese children, it would do something other than just exploiting them as a means of raising money for the state.

Dr. Will Clower, author of “The Fat Fallacy: Applying the French Diet to the American Lifestyle” and founder of The PATH Curriculum simplifies the complexities of healthy eating, boiling complicated ideas into easily digestible bites, always with a sense of humor. He has released for his list of the “Top Ten Tips” for royally screwing up the diet in the coming year, with the hope that all of us fail miserably:
1. Follow the fad. Be on the lookout for the newest of all the new diets – the more esoteric and absurd the better. Think cabbage soup, peanut butter and fat-be-gone rings. Statistically speaking, these have failed so often that sooner or later they must finally work.
2. Master speed eating. Speed-eat so food spends more time in the gullet than in the mouth. Otherwise, you’ll taste your low-whatever, cardboard-flavored food product. Remember, the goal is to do anything but enjoy food, so be sure to gobble it down in 10 minutes or less.
3. Find the food condoms. Plastic-wrapped food is what to look for. If it’s found in a pre-packaged form, eat it. If you have no idea how long it has been on a shelf, eat it. If all of the items in the case look exactly the same, like they are all stamped out of the same food widget mold – go for it.
4. Eat all the time. Graze. Think bovine thoughts. Start with five to six small meals, and work up from there. At some point, you’ll wind up eating all day. At that point, you’re really only having one meal per day. Keeping snack foods in desk drawers – not to mention in vehicles – is encouraged.
5. Eat on the go. Eat in the car, while standing, wherever. Just keep moving so calories are burned as they are shoveled in. Eating in a rush and huff is fantastic because it never allows the body to digest food – no digestion, no calories!
6. Never mind. Eat at the desk, alone, while working. Eat while watching TV at night while being distracted by the latest episode of “The Biggest Loser.”
7. Pursue platter portions. Serve meals on the largest plate available. Turn over a garbage can lid, if available and make sure to completely fill the space with whatever can be ladled into it. Remember this equation: more diet food = more diet = more weight loss. Do the math.
8. Bite the big one. Take huge bites. Squirrel packing cheek pockets will ensure that more weight is lost, in time to fit into a fantasy bathing suit by June.
9. Practice gastro-physics. Eat a candy bar and follow-up it with a diet product. For example, diet sodas and Snickers are dietary matter and anti-matter, cancelling each other out. So eat something naughty and chase it down with a Diet Coke or two.
10. Go for the glo. Focus on foods that look like they originated in outer space. Think day-glo pink, neon orange. Those nuclear-yellow marshmallow “peeps” are an ideal screw-up-the-diet food. What’s the reasoning? The people on this planet are too fat. Is there such thing as an overweight Martian?
